“Transylvania offers personal instruction, great band programs, and ample opportunities to perform.”

“Musical expression is meant to convey meaning to the listener,” Scott Heersche says. But it’s up to the musician to deliver the message.

Heersche encourages students to consider the meaning of each musical phrase. The chemistry between music and meaning isn’t so hard to concoct, though. For Heersche, it’s simple. “Sound is everything, and music emerges from it. Visualize the sound and the melody and all else follows.”

It's also important for students to focus on the fundamentals, and then work on technique to support those fundamentals. Heersche enjoys seeing students develop the confidence that enables them to relish their craft.

In addition to teaching trumpet at Transylvania, Heersche is the full-time pastor of worship for Centenary Church, where he directs choirs, leads singing for services, and enjoys writing original songs for worship. When not spending time with his family, you might find him on the golf course.
