Lexington is...

A vibrant city

Lexington has an active arts and entertainment scene. Art studios showcase local, national, and international artists. Clubs and restaurants feature live music throughout the week and on weekends, and the pavilion at Cheapside features live music outdoors just a few blocks from campus every Thursday evening from late spring through early fall.

Street concert

The historic Kentucky Theatre shows new releases and art films along with classic movies, while the Lexington Opera House stages plays and productions ranging from independent shows to Broadway musicals. The night life has something for everyone, and it’s all within walking distance of Transylvania’s campus.

Just minutes beyond the city borders lie acres of rolling hills, the Kentucky Horse Park, and more than 500 horse farms, solidifying Lexington’s reputation as The Horse Capital of the World. Keeneland race track, site of the most well-known horse sales in the world, offers opportunities to participate in a true southern racing tradition, viewing some of the best Thoroughbred race horses and jockeys during fall and spring meets. The Red Mile harness racing track, located in downtown Lexington, has been the site of Kentucky harness racing since 1875 and continues to draw crowds every year.

A caring community

Transylvania students have a variety of volunteer opportunities:

Close to nature

  • The Arboretum. State Botanical Garden of Kentucky; gardens, walkways, jogging paths, seven physiographic regions.
  • McConnell Springs. The birthplace of Lexington; natural springs, education center.
  • Legacy Trail. Eight-mile paved trail from near the Kentucky Horse Park to near downtown Lexington; a popular destination for walkers, runners, cyclists, and inline skaters.
  • Raven Run Nature Sanctuary. Just a few miles southeast of Lexington, 734 acres preserving the natural beauty of the Kentucky River Palisades and early history of the area; 10 miles of hiking trails.
  • Red River Gorge Geological Area. Just an hour from campus, a spectacular gorge carved over millions of years that offers scenic hiking trails and overlooks; a top world destination for sport climbing.

See more to do across town and in the area.
