Tomas Sjostrom, the James Cullen Chair in Economics at Rutgers University, is an associate member of the economics Nobel prize committee. His early work was on the topic of Mechanism Design, the mathematical analysis of social institutions. Currently, he is asking "Why is there war rather than peace?" and "How does the brain work?" His presentation is on "The Hobbesian Trap," which looks at international conflict and diplomacy. It studies how uncertainty generates fear and triggers conflict when actions are strategic complements. Free and open to the public.
