Recreational opportunities abound at Transylvania. Students, faculty, and staff members can participate in intramural sports, fitness and wellness programs, outdoor adventures, club sports, and informal recreation. Choices include structured tournaments, active play, and individual activities.
Campus recreation teaches new skills and encourages physical activity in a fun atmosphere. All students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to become involved throughout the year.
The Clive M. Beck Athletic and Recreation Center is the one-stop shop for fitness and wellness. Transylvania community members can get information on health and fitness issues, pump it up with a personal trainer, have fun in a group fitness class, or participate in a wellness workshop or nutrition program. Check out some of the options below.
Group fitness classes provide a non-competitive, supportive environment that welcomes people from all walks of life and levels of fitness—from age 18 to 80, overweight or thin, muscular or mushy, or anywhere in between. Classes range from muscular strength and core training to cardiovascular endurance and flexibility.
Certified personal trainers are available for Transylvania community members who are ready to begin an exercise program but don’t know how to get started, or who may be in a rut with their current workout or frustrated with not seeing results. Our trainers help make individual workouts more efficient and fun by focusing on the scientific principles that produce results and suggesting new, innovative exercises.
Sports and Conditioning
Campus athletes who are looking to step up their game, or students, faculty, and staff members who want to supplement their regular workout can take advantage of Transy’s sports and conditioning program. These supervised workouts are designed to improve core strength, agility, cardiovascular endurance, speed, and flexibility. Equipment used in the workouts includes medicine balls, plyometric boxes, jump ropes (speed and weighted), cones, agility ladder, bosu balls, weighted vests, stability balls, dumbbells, tubing, and more.
In addition to fitness programs, the Beck Center offers numerous wellness programs, in conjunction with student health services. These programs promote a balanced lifestyle by focusing on physical, mental, intellectual, social, and spiritual health. Transy’s wellness programs are designed to enhance health awareness, motivate actions to change lives, create environments that support good health practices, and prevent illness, injury, and disability.
Intramural sports offer students, faculty, and staff members the opportunity to get involved, meet people, and relieve stress—all while having fun and improving health. Students participate in 24 intramural activities. The program provides entertainment and a rallying point for Transylvania community members, regardless of their athletic ability.

Those who love the outdoors will find plenty of recreational opportunities at Transylvania. On campus, students, faculty, and staff can take advantage of sand volleyball and tennis courts, enjoy lawn games (including Frisbee, croquet, horseshoes, Quidditch, and corn hole), or get involved with a club sport.
Off campus, several parks and trails are in close proximity to Transy. In particular, runners and cyclists may want to check out the paved Legacy Trail just a few blocks from campus. Bring your bike for recreation and transportation!
The William T. Young Campus Center is the place for Transylvania community members to enjoy indoor activities, either individually or with friends. Among the amenities available are a racquetball court, indoor pool, game room, billiards tables, ping pong table, foosball table, and a large selection of board games.
