“Our new students will discover a different relationship to knowledge than they had during their high school days, where they mostly absorbed information and gave it back in papers and on tests.

"Through critical reading, they will learn how to have a dialogue with the text and then expand that into a dialogue in the class with their fellow students and professors. They will learn how to ask the large questions that are at the center of a liberal education."

—John Svarlien, classics professor and former faculty director for August term

Program Overview

Transylvania's faculty understand that the transition from high school to college can sometimes prove challenging, and they want to do everything possible to ensure each student's success.

At the same time, they remain committed to the principles of a liberal arts education and are eager to help students embrace the intellectual curiosity and analytical thinking that requires.

With those goals in mind, Transylvania offers first-year students a distinctive, innovative, and integrated four-part academic program to help ensure a smooth transition to college academics and the demands of a liberal arts curriculum.
