Matthew Durr: Music Education con brio

“The one-on-one attention given by the music teachers, the lesson instructors, and the conductors is unparalleled. They know you personally. They know what you want to get out of your education. And they will do everything they can to get you to your ultimate goal.”

Matthew Durr

Matthew Durr ’14 is a music education major from Georgetown, Ky. While he studies to be a future educator, he also plays trombone in the Transylvania Concert Band, Jazz Band, and Frankfort’s Capital City Community Band.

“The structure of learning is hands-on, with less lecture than I expected,” Durr says. He values “the individual attention from faculty. Due in part to the school's small population, but due mostly to the quality professors teaching small classes,” he says. “The further you go up in a music degree, the greater the sense of community becomes, where you know and work with all the other students that are taking the same major path as you.”

Frequent performances and special workshops by professional musicians have also enhanced Durr’s college experience. In 2011 Durr took part in a clinic with trombonist Achilles Liarmakopoulos of the Canadian Brass, named “the world’s leading brass ensemble” by The Washington Post. “Performing Méditation from Thaïs with him was the experience of a lifetime,” Durr says.
