“I knew I had to study abroad. I saw students after they returned from their trips and they seemed changed somehow, like they had a secret, and I wanted to discover that secret.”
Scores of academic programs all over the world have been approved for transfer credit by Transylvania’s Faculty Committee on Admissions and Academic Standards. These programs are offered by a multitude of institutions, including:
Students can contact the study abroad office for information about specific programs or visit the study abroad site on Inside Transy.
Studying abroad during the summer is a great option for students whose academic schedules or other commitments prevent them from being away from campus during fall or winter term.
Programs are typically three to six weeks long, and internships and service learning projects are available. Students earn academic credit, and many programs offer opportunities to stay with local families.
Courses offered by the Kentucky Institute for International Studies (KIIS) are especially popular and affordable.
Students who want to study abroad for a full semester or summer program must first consult with the study abroad office and complete a Transylvania Study Abroad Application. If students want courses taken abroad to apply to their general education or major/minor requirements, they must get approval from the registrar and the academic program director. With prior approval from faculty, students may also earn academic credit for participating in unpaid internships abroad.
In many cases, students will want to start working on their applications a full year in advance of the program they want to attend. Most application deadlines fall six to nine months before the beginning of the program.
If you're not quite ready to spend a full term abroad, or you would prefer to first travel with a small group of Transylvania students and professors, you may want to consider a May term travel course. Experience the excitement—and the challenges—of traveling and studying in another country while you develop confidence in your ability to adapt to new environs.
Students in all majors can find a class that appeals to them. Check out the variety of topics recent May term classes have covered.
Note that students wanting to participate in a May term travel course do not need to submit the Transylvania Study Abroad Application or meet with staff in the study abroad office.
